CHAPTER 12 Abram and Lot Enter Canaan

1 And the lord said to Abram, Come forth from out of your land, and from your kin, and from the house of your father, and come into the land which ever I shall show to you. 2 And I will make you into [²nation ¹a great], and I will bless you, and I will magnify your name, and you will be a blessing. 3 And I will bless the ones blessing you; and the ones cursing you, I will curse. And [⁶will be blessed ⁷by ⁸you ¹all ²the ³tribes ⁴of the ⁵earth]. 4 And Abram went just as [²spoke ³to him ¹the lord]. And [²set out ³with ⁴him ¹Lot]. And Abram was [²years old ¹seventy-five] when he came forth from out of Haran. 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot the son of his brother, and all their possessions, as much as they acquired, and every soul which they acquired from out of Haran. And they went forth to go into the land of Canaan. And they entered into the land of Canaan. 6 And Abram traveled through the land unto the place of Shechem unto the [²oak ¹high]. And the Canaanites then dwelt the land. 7 And the lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, [³to ⁴your seed ¹I will give ²this land]. And [²built ³there ¹Abram] an altar to the lord, to the one appearing to him. 8 And he left from there into the mountain according to the east of Beth-el. And he set up there his tent in Beth-el according to the west, and Hai according to the east. And he built there an altar to the lord, and he called upon the name of the lord. 9 And Abram departed; and going he encamped in the wilderness.

Abram and Sarai in Egypt

10 And there was a famine upon the land. And Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there, for [³grew in strength ¹the ²famine] upon the land. 11 And it was when Abram approached to enter into Egypt, Abram said to Sarai his wife, I know that [³woman ²a good-looking ¹you are]. 12 It will be then as when [³shall see ⁴you ¹the ²Egyptians] they will say that his wife is this one, and they will kill me, [³you ¹and ²procure]. 13 Say then that! [²his sister ¹I am]. so that [²good ³to me ¹it may become] on account of you, and [²shall live ¹my soul] because of you. 14 And it came to pass when Abram entered into Egypt, [³were looking at ¹the ²Egyptians] his wife, for [³beautiful ¹she was ²exceedingly]. 15 And [⁴beheld ⁵her ¹the ²rulers ³of Pharaoh], and praised her to Pharaoh; and they brought her into the house to Pharaoh. 16 And [²Abram ³well ¹they treated] on account of her, and there existed to him sheep, and calves, and donkeys, and manservants, and maidservants, and mules and camels. 17 And the lord chastised Pharaoh [⁴chastisements ¹with great ²and ³severe], and his house, on account of Sarai the wife of Abram. 18 [³calling ¹And ²Pharaoh] Abram, said, What is this you did to me, that you reported not to me that [²wife ¹she is your]? 19 Why did you say that, [²my sister ¹She is]; and I took her to myself as wife? And now, behold, your wife is before you -- taking her run from me! 20 And Pharaoh charged the men concerning Abram, to escort him out, and his wife, and all, as much as was his, and Lot with him.
